The Fred Waara Chapter of Trout Unlimited will provide selected youth from our region with the $350 registration fee and also contribute $100 to offset the cost of traveling to the MacMullan Conference Center. In order to compete for a stipend, applicants should email their one-page essay on why they would like to attend the camp to [email protected] before March 30th.

Camp details and information

The Kalamazoo Valley Chapter Trout Unlimited (KVCTU) is once again hosting the annual Michigan Youth Conservation & Trout Camp Sunday June 19-Thursday June 23rd, 2022 at the Ralph A. MacMullan Conference Center on Higgins Lake in the heart of Northern Michigan trout country. Campers will collect and learn to identify macro-invertebrates important to trout as well as the importance of coldwater quality and stream habitat. Students will discover what trout need to survive, where they hide, and with help from some of Michigan`s leading conservationists and anglers, how to catch them.

No previous fly-fishing experience is necessary!  In the evenings, the students will get to test their new skills on all three branches of the famous Au Sable River, casting to beautiful brookies, spunky rainbows, and big brown trout. All of this will be under the guidance of local experts and Trout Unlimited volunteers. The Camp is made possible through the efforts of Trout Unlimited National and the many Michigan Trout Unlimited Chapters with their volunteers and members, as well as the Michigan DNR Fisheries Division.

The Michigan Youth Trout Camp is open to a maximum of 20 boys and girls ages 14 to 17 years old and roughly half the spots are still available for the 2022 Camp. Each applicant MUST complete the following requirements and submit their application no later than April 30, 2022:

  1. Complete the 2022 Youth Camp Application: Camp Application
  2. Submit a one-page essay on why you would like to attend the camp.
  3. Enclose a letter of recommendation from a teacher, member of a conservation group, or church official.

Additional details and information may be found on the KVCTU website.

Since the registration fee does not have to accompany the application, we encourage youth to apply while there still is room available. Send the complete camper application to:
